In any big comparison test, whether it be for tyres, cars, or anything else, finding a winner within an individual class is the norm. Hence, crowning AUTA 2022’s champions in the Ultra High Performance, Comfort, Sport Utility Vehicle, Eco, and Mainstream categories was relatively straightforward. But sometimes, people just want to know what’s the best, period. So in addition to the individual categories, we also set out to find which single one of our 23 tyres really was the cream of the crop.
The main challenge was making a fair comparison, as each of AUTA 2022’s five tyre categories was tested using a different Kia model. For instance, it’s difficult to determine how much of the 4–10 second gap in Dry Handling (Circuit) lap times between the Mainstream and UHP categories was due to tyre performance versus the inherent differences between the Kia Stonic and the Stinger V6.
To address this, we collaborated with our Technical Partners at the National University of Singapore’s Formula SAE team. They developed a formula that accounts for variations in power, performance, size, and weight across the different Kia vehicles.
TL;DR: The Ultimate Winner is the tyre that comes closest to the theoretical “perfect” tyre.
Unlike the individual category awards, the Overall Tyre of the Year title is based on a comprehensive evaluation across all seven test stations. We calculated percentage scores from each station and incorporated a small subjective component derived from our test drivers’ feedback. The final scoring breakdown is as follows:
-
Average score across seven stations: 90%
-
Subjective driver feedback: 10%
As passionate car and driving enthusiasts, we were excited for the arrival of the Bridgestone Potenza Sport in Singapore—and it absolutely lived up to the anticipation. With impressive grip, sharp responsiveness, and clear feedback, it delivered everything we look for in a high-performance road tyre.
